Miroir des Classiques is a codicological and textual database devoted to describing translations of classical authors into Gallo-Romance languages. Since 2017, the Miroir has hosted a detailed directory of translations of the Corpus juris civilisand their witnesses.
Miroir des classiques is part of the long tradition of studies devoted to medieval vernacular translations at the École des Chartes - PSL. Its starting point was Jacques Monfrin's 1955 unpublished memoir, submitted to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-lettres, which catalogued this collection of translations.
Thanks to funding from the Equipex Biblissima, then Biblissima+, the Miroir was able to describe with the utmost precision all the preserved evidence of medieval translations of the Corpus juris civilis. The complete transcription of the headings now provides easy access to all the digitised manuscripts. Extracts from each manuscript have been transcribed, leading to initial scriptological assessments and a genealogical classification of the witnesses.
Partial digital editions of each translation are currently being produced. They will be integrated into the database.
