The École’s Curricula

The École delivers education in the analysis and conservation of historical sources, sciences auxiliary to history and in the use of digital technologies for data exploitation.

  • The Archiviste paléographe degree

    This degree delivers high-level education for future civil servants in preparation for careers as curators of written, graphic and monumental heritage.

  • Master’s Degrees

    The École offers three Master's degrees: ‘Digital Technologies Applied to History’, ‘Transnational History’ and ‘Digital Humanities’.

  • Les diplômes universitaires

    L’École propose deux diplômes universitaires : « Histoire des familles et généalogie » et « Érudition - Fondamentaux de l’École des chartes - PSL ».

  • Doctoral Studies

    The École offers doctoral courses in history, art history, archaeology, law and literature. The three-year doctorate is open to anyone holding a master's degree.

  • La Prépa Talents

    L’École participe à la Prépa Talents, dispositif qui accompagne les candidats aux concours externes de conservateur du patrimoine.

A Campus in the Heart of Paris

The École nationale des chartes - PSL is located in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, an area rich in history and heritage institutions. 

The École is right next to the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Institut National de l'Histoire de l'Art, the Institut National du Patrimoine, the École du Louvre, the Ministry of Culture and the Service Interministériel des Archives de France, in the Marais district.

An Exceptional Library

The library was founded in 1846 to welcome the École’s students and academic staff. It is widely recognised for its wealth of material in sciences auxiliary to history. The library’s collections have been awarded the national CollEX label, ‘Collections d’excellence pour la recherche’.

Unusually for a study and research library, it offers open access to almost all its 145,000 volumes.

Centre Jean-Mabillon

Portraits of Researchers

The École’s research team, the Centre Jean-Mabillon (EA 3624), includes around one hundred researchers, with forty doctoral students and an equal number of curators.

The Centre Jean-Mabillon research areas cover all the processes that explain and promote written production from the Middle Ages to the present.
